In the first three examples a decided preference is shown for the masculine gender, and in the next two for the nearest nominative. The names of two or more things of similar nature or character are often taken as an aggregate and have a singular verb. A Nominative case is sometimes put independently at the beginning of a sentence without any verb; but it is followed by a relative connected with a verb.
